Tee & Charlie
Charles Addams and Tee Matthews Davie met in the 1940s when they were both married to their first spouses. Each lived in New York City as a primary residence and eventually had their week-end homes on Long Island, Tee in East Hampton and Charlie in Westhampton Beach. Two marriages later they became husband and wife, marrying in the pet cemetery of Tee’s permanent home in Water Mill, New York on May 31, 1980. They all wore black.
Cemeteries always represented something special to the Addamses. Because of Charlie’s keen interest in the art of old headstones, coupled with the tranquility of such locations, they often picnicked in cemeteries during their travels. One such trip in the 1970s was to Civil War battlefields and associated burial grounds that they toured with their four dogs packed into the antique-filled van they fondly named “The Heap.”
Early in 1985, Tee and Charlie and all their dogs and cats moved to The Swamp, the name they bestowed upon their wild and wonderful property in Sagaponack, New York. Though Charlie still maintained his apartment in the City, overflowing with his collections of arms and armor, they lived at The Swamp for the rest of their lives. Their ashes and those of all their pets are interred in the pet cemetery.
